day 14! guting, shilin night market

Another lazy start to the day. :) Leave the apt around mid afternoon, once again on the lookout for food. I swear, if I ever get stuck on abandoned island with Michael we are just gonna be screwed. I can't scrounge for food 24/7 I JUST CAN'T DO IT. X< But fair's fair, he's really patient when I drag him around shopping for clothes, so I will be patient while he shops for food. :)

We walk around Guting (our station) which is pretty lacking in food. :( Or fun stuff. We did find this one bread shop with delicious looking breads. But I think they were delicious looking because they were unhealthy looking...
See what I mean? :p
Had to talk fast to convince Michael not to get this pizza bread.
Had to talk fast to convince myself not to get these cute cakes.
The pikachu one is too adorable. :'3 LOOK HOW HAPPY IT IS!!!  I hope you never get eaten, sweet little cake. :'3
On our way back home, we stopped by this little stand. It's literally just one small corner of a building with two women working in it. The line is always crazy long so we decided we needed to see what all the fuss was about. Turns out, it's just long cuz for some reason it takes this lady ages to finish making a batch. I think people must place big orders of things?? They're these little...."cupcakes" with filling inside. You can choose from all sorts of sweet flavors: red been, custard, peanut, sesames, strawberry, etc....
Closeup. We waited like 15 min for one custard one. Wasn't that good.
We headed home for a nap, or something. Forgot why. Partially cuz it had started raining lightly. Evening rolls around though, and we decide to go back to Shilin night market. Michael wants his shenjianbao (steamed buns?) from his favorite stand there, and as he pointed out, the two times we went before we didn't get to shop, only ate stuff.

Here's the dude making the shenjianbao. :) He takes the raw bao's, lines them all up on this flat griddle thing, adds a bit of water, and then covers it with a huge flat lid. Steamsteamsteamcookcookcook, and out come these little pot sticker-like baozi's! :) shen = raw, jian = steam, bao = bun. There is also a slight variant, suijianbao, where sui = water. The basic baozi is made the same way, but they're cooked differently. Shenjianbao are put directly into the griddle, from its raw state, but suijianbao, I believe they are cooked using a different method first? It's a small nuance but makes a huge different in the end, in the texture of the wrapping. Shenjianbao kind of ends up like a pot sticker, but suijianbao is almost just like a normal steamed bun. :) Probably a bit healthier for you too.
It always boggles my mind that, no matter how many night markets you to go, or how many times you go, you will always fine new and interesting kinds of food there. This little stand had all sorts of like...rotisserie chicken I guess? Chicken breast, wing, thigh, etc. You can see them all getting cooked in that thing to the right -- little wings dangling. O_O kind of morbidly cute. You pick out whatever you want and put it in a bowl, then the lady weighs it and tells you how much you owe. Michael picked up a couple things here to try.
Oops, not a good day for photos. :3 Umm. Not pictured here: me buying many many clothes. I think Shilin is the most...popular/well known night market? And as such many parts of it are perhaps over commercialized and yucky. But they do have a lot of clothes, and I do like the style of stuff they sell there ^^;; And most of it is dirt cheap. It's funny cuz your money/value system gets so skewed. You see a shirt and you're like "how much?" and the lady'll be like "300dollars" and you're like WHAT, all the other shirts I got were 150!! what a ripoff. -_- buuuuut when you think about it, 300 = $10, 150 = $5. It reaaaalllly isn't very much. You just get lulled into how cheap everything is. O_O And the horrible part is that when I'm in Japan I'm sure i'll be like 2000yen?? SO CHEAP I HAVE TO GET IT. even though 2000yen = $20. Sooooo yea. Gotta keep reminding myself of that. Perspective!

All in all a pretty good day. :)
